Books & Bücher by Bernd Wahlbrinck
1. Books in English
This textbook about
German-English language interference comprises an extensive
introduction to the topic, 56 innovative worksheets, and a humorous
section. The worksheets appear on the left-hand page with the solutions
on the opposite page, which should prove very convenient for teachers
and ESL students.
The book focusses on two different types of inter-ference: On the one hand there are innumerable cases of external interference, i.e. disruptions because of discrepancies between the German and the English language. For example, the German expression ein Beispiel für induces most beginners to assume that the English preposition is the same, thus using an example for instead of an example of. On the other hand there are all kinds of internal interference, i.e. disruptions within the English language. A case in point is the following group of words, which are pronounced differently although they might seem to rhyme: cough - dough - plough - rough - though - through - tough A comprehensive index complements the worksheets. The textbook reflects the author’s extensive experience as an English teacher at a Gymnasium in northwest Germany.

Fabulous Books Looking for an
Author is a satirical anthology comprising 44 reviews of books that do
not exist, including the fictitious front covers of those books.
It features such diverse topics as literature, language, music, art, movies, travel, famous people, and science. Odd as that may seem, Wahlbrinck has got a number of famous predecessors. Above all, there is A Perfect Vacuum (Doskonala Próznia), published in 1973 by the famous Polish author Stanislaw Lem, comprising 16 reviews of books that were never written. Another one is Ficciones, published in 1944 by the renowned Argentine writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges.

This Brief Yet Indispensable
Guide to English Pronunciation is intended for people who already have
some basic knowledge of the English language but want to extend it.
The author focuses on important rules regarding the pronunciation of all 26 letters of the alphabet. Besides, this guide could even be interesting for native speakers. While they will normally have no problem regarding the pronunciation of words, they might be interested in looking at their language from a different point of view, not to mention seeing what foreigners actually have to cope with. The guide also features a humorous appendix.

Harrison
Ford is John Book. A big city cop who knows too much. His only
evidence: a small boy who’s seen too much.
This is the dramatic tagline of the 1985 film Witness, which was famously directed by Peter Weir. However, the film offers a lot more – it is in fact 3 movies in one: A riveting crime thriller, a moving love story, and a poignant clash of cultures between mainstream American culture and that of the Amish people. All of this is supported by Maurice Jarre’s great music, by John Seale’s beautiful cinematography, and by a group of superb actors, especially Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lukas Haas, Jan Rubeš, Danny Glover, and Alexander Godunov. This book is an attempt at showing why Witness is a fantastic film and why, after so many years, it is still worth (re-)watching.

Detectorists
is a British television comedy series which was broadcast on BBC Four
between 2014 and 2017. It was written and directed by Mackenzie Crook,
who also stars alongside Toby Jones.
Mackenzie Crook’s fabulous script, his quirky characters, the superb cast, the ingenious subplots, the contagious humour, and the beautiful Essex landscape make for outstanding enter-tainment. One of the most endearing aspects of the series is Crook’s incredible ability to sneak in all kinds of allusions – some quite easy to detect, others very challenging. This is an illustrated guide to the most interesting ones.

Readers who have enjoyed or are
going to enjoy Thomas Berger’s masterpiece Little Big Man and its
sequel The Return of Little Big Man will find this book very helpful
and should keep it close at hand.
It is a chapter by chapter companion to Berger’s novels in which Bernd Wahlbrinck has conveniently incorporated contemporary photos, illustrations and background information for historic characters, e.g. Sitting Bull, the Earp brothers, Wild Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, etc.; for historic places, e.g. Deadwood, Tombstone; and finally, for certain objects some readers might not be familiar with, e.g. a travois or a Gatling gun.

On December 17, 2021, in an
antique bookshop in Tucson, Arizona, the author unexpectedly bumps into
a copy of William Lindisfarne’s long-lost autobiography, who, as we all
know, wrote the famous “Ballad of a Guitar Man”.
“A real treat. Reminds me of Thomas Berger’s Little Big Man.” Now, for the first time in history, there is a chance to analyze the iconic ballad by taking into account the autobiographical background of the poetic Frontierman himself. Well – actually, this is the author’s fictitious approach to a tall tale of vast proportions. Open this book and immerse yourself in a fabulous world of cowboys, gunslingers, rustlers, bank robbers, buffalo hunters, deputy sheriffs, crazy preachers, saloon girls, and guitars that are hard to tune.
